Salvation

What it means

Jesus tells Nicodemus that God's love moved him to give his only Son, so that whoever believes in him has everlasting life instead of perishing.

Why every Christian should know it

It holds the whole gospel in one sentence: God's love, God's gift, our faith, our future. It is the first verse most believers learn, and the last one they forget.

Father, you loved a world that did not love you, and you gave your Son. Let me never speak of that gift casually. Keep me believing today.

What it means

Paul closes his case against every human being: all have sinned and fall short of God's glory. Not most people. All.

Nobody wants a saviour until they know they are lost. This verse levels the ground so grace can be received as grace.

Lord, I stop measuring myself against other people. I fall short of you. Teach me to say that honestly and then look to Christ.

What it means

Sin pays a wage, and the wage is death. Eternal life is not a wage at all. It is a free gift in Christ Jesus.

It puts the two economies of the Bible side by side. One is earned, one is given, and you can only live in one of them.

Father, I have earned death and been handed life. Guard me from ever calling your gift my achievement.

What it means

God proved his love, not by waiting for us to improve, but by sending Christ to die while we were still sinners.

On days when you feel unlovable, this verse tells you when God decided to love you. It was before you cleaned anything up.

Lord Jesus, you died for me at my worst. Let that settle my heart when my conscience accuses me.

What it means

Salvation comes by grace through faith, God's gift and not the result of works, so that nobody can boast. Paul does not stop there: we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works he prepared beforehand. Grace saves us from working for standing, and then sends us into the works love was made for.

Why every Christian should know it

Every false gospel eventually asks you to contribute something. This passage closes that door and keeps the glory with God, while verse 10 keeps grace from becoming an excuse for idleness.

What it means

Peter stands before the council and says salvation is found in no one else. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.

It is the verse that makes Christian faith unpopular and unchangeable at the same time. Jesus is not one way among many.

Lord, give me courage to say your name plainly, and gentleness in the way I say it.

What it means

Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him, and you will be saved. Belief and confession belong together.

It shows what saving faith looks like from the inside and the outside. A hidden faith and a mouth without a heart are both incomplete.
