The Prophets Point to Christ

What it means

Seven centuries before Calvary, Isaiah writes that he was pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities, that the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and that by his wounds we are healed. Peter and Philip both read these words as speaking of Jesus.

Why every Christian should know it

It is the Old Testament's plainest description of substitution, and it shows the cross was planned rather than improvised.

Pray it back

Lord, the punishment that brought me peace fell on you. I receive that peace instead of trying to earn it.

What it means

Out of Bethlehem, small among the towns of Judah, comes one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origins are from of old. Matthew records the chief priests quoting this verse to Herod.

Why every Christian should know it

It shows prophecy that is specific enough to be checked, and it keeps Christmas tied to the Old Testament rather than floating free of it.

Lord, you came to a small town as promised. Thank you that your word holds in detail.

What it means

The psalmist describes pierced hands and feet, bones on display, and clothing divided by lot. All four Gospels draw on this psalm when they narrate the crucifixion, and Jesus quotes its opening line from the cross.

It teaches you how the Gospel writers read their Bibles, and it lets you hear Jesus praying Scripture in his worst hour.
