Abide and Bear Fruit

Jesus describes fruitfulness as a matter of staying joined, not of trying harder.

The Devotional
Jesus is speaking on the last night before . The image he chooses is a , and he assigns the roles carefully: I am , you are the branches.
The command is abide. Then he gives the reason from the picture itself: as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in . A branch does not produce by effort. It produces them by remaining connected to what carries the life.
He states the outcome both ways. He that abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit. Then: without me you can do nothing. Both halves are needed. The first prevents despair; the second prevents self reliance.
For an ordinary week this changes the first question. Not what should I produce for God today, but where am I staying connected to him today.
Look Closer
Jesus does not tell the to produce fruit. He tells them to abide, and describes fruit as what follows. The only thing commanded here is the connection.

Abiding is the command; fruit is the result.
Much fruit comes from remaining joined to Christ.
Apart from him there is nothing to produce.
Today's Prayer
Lord Jesus, I have been measuring my day by what I produced. Teach me to stay joined to you, to let your words stay in me, and to trust you for the fruit. Amen.
