Ezra comes up from Babylon to Jerusalem, and the good hand of his God is on him for the journey.

The returns came in waves across a century: Sheshbazzar and Zerubbabel to raise the , Ezra with the law, Nehemiah with the 's letters for the walls. Each caravan walked back along the same Euphrates arc the exiles had been marched down.

is the road at its most honest: treasure to carry, bandits to fear, and a leader who had told the God would protect them, and so had to travel as if he it.

Identification note. The route retraced the Euphrates corridor west to Damascus and south to Jerusalem.

The return route is the exile route reversed, nearly a thousand kilometres of it. Ezra's fasting at the Ahava canal is prayer placed exactly where the danger was: at the start of the unprotected stretch.
