The cross remains the center, not a starting point left behind.

The truth of the day
Paul is candid about how the cross sounded to its first hearers: an offense to Jewish expectations of a triumphant Messiah, and nonsense to Greek expectations of wisdom and power. He does not soften the message to make it land better. He preaches it as it is.
This is a letter to a church tempted to split into factions around eloquent teachers. Paul's answer is to bring them back, again, to the cross, as if the whole Christian life keeps needing to return to that same starting point rather than moving past it.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
1 Corinthians 1:18-25 sets up a contrast between human wisdom and the cross that Paul calls the power and wisdom of God. He is not merely conceding that the cross is hard to explain. He is arguing that its apparent weakness and foolishness are exactly where God's power and wisdom are shown.
Paul's determination in 2:2, to know nothing among them except Jesus Christ and him crucified, comes right after this passage. For a church impressed by rhetoric and status, Paul deliberately narrows his message rather than broadening it, because he judges the cross itself, not his own persuasiveness, to be what does the work.
