The Lampstands of Revelation
Christ walks among his churches and sees them clearly.

The truth of the day
This warning is given to the church at Ephesus, a church commended for hard work, endurance and doctrinal discernment (Revelation 2:2-3), yet told it has left its first love. Faithful activity is not the same as faithful love, and the letter treats the loss as serious enough to threaten the church's very existence as a lampstand.
Christ is described earlier in the chapter (2:1) as walking among the seven golden lampstands, which represent the churches (1:20). He is not distant from local congregations; he moves among them, sees their labour, and names their failures precisely.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The seven letters in Revelation 2-3 each follow a pattern: a description of Christ drawn from chapter 1, a commendation where warranted, a rebuke where warranted, a call to hear what the Spirit says, and a promise to the one who overcomes. Ephesus, despite its strong commendation, receives one of the sharpest warnings of removal in all seven letters.
The remedy given is threefold and concrete: remember, repent, and do the first works. Christ does not ask for a renewed feeling alone; he asks for a return to earlier, faithful action, suggesting that love, though it begins as affection, is meant to be sustained through practice.
