Paul's final word on the tongue this week is about how to answer, not only what to avoid.

The truth of the day
Paul asks for speech that is both gracious and seasoned with salt, which suggests something with flavour and substance, not bland or vague. Grace does not mean speech that says nothing definite.
The purpose he names is knowing how to answer each one, implying that the same truth may need different words depending on who is being spoken to. Wisdom in speech includes reading the person in front of you.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Colossians 4:5-6 pairs this instruction with walking in wisdom toward outsiders and making the most of the time, placing careful speech inside the larger task of representing Christ well to people outside the church. The verse is not only about private conversations between believers.
Salt in the ancient world preserved and gave flavour, and Jesus uses the same image in Matthew 5:13 to describe his disciples generally. Paul narrows the image specifically to speech, asking that a believer's words do for a conversation what salt does for food: keep it from going flat or going bad.
