The Will That Is Already Revealed
Much of God's will for you is not hidden at all.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
Paul states God's will directly and specifically, without ambiguity: sanctification, and a concrete area of it. Much of what believers pray to discover, God has already told them plainly in Scripture.
This matters because searching for hidden guidance can quietly become a way of avoiding the guidance already given. Before asking what career or house God wants, it is worth asking whether the revealed will, holiness in specific, nameable areas, is being obeyed.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The Thessalonian church lived in a culture where sexual ethics were far looser than the standard Paul lays out, and he grounds his instruction not in cultural preference but in God's will and God's call, verse 7: God didn't call us for uncleanness, but in sanctification. The revealed will is rooted in God's character, not merely apostolic advice.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 gives further explicit statements of God's will: rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you. Together these passages show that Scripture's category of the revealed will covers far more everyday ground than most guidance-seeking assumes.
