The truth of the day
John writes this to ordinary believers, calling them little children, in the middle of a warning about false spirits and antichrist teaching. Their overcoming is stated as already true, not as a future hope only.
The comparison is stark: he who is in you against he who is in the world. The confidence John gives does not rest on the believer's skill in the fight but on who indwells them.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The chapter's concern is testing spirits, distinguishing the spirit of truth from the spirit of error, in 1 John 4:1-6. The overcoming John describes in verse 4 is specifically about not being deceived by false teaching, a quieter but no less real front in the same conflict Paul describes in Ephesians.
John's letters return often to this confidence: 1 John 5:4 says whatever is born of God overcomes the world, and names faith as the victory that overcomes. The overcoming is tied consistently to who a person belongs to, not to their circumstances.

Canonical themeRomans 16:20 promises that the God of peace will soon crush Satan under the feet of believers, an echo of Genesis 3:15's promise that the offspring of the woman would crush the serpent's head. The fight ends where it began, with a promise now working itself out in ordinary lives.
