52 Week Journey

Week 49 of 52

The Return of Christ

He who ascended will come again in the same way he went.

Built on . The disciples watch Jesus taken up, and two angels promise that he will return in the same manner he left. The whole New Testament hope hangs on that promise.

Every week so far has looked at what God has done and what he is doing. This week looks forward, to what he has promised he will do. The New Testament writers do not treat the return of Christ as a private theory for the curious. They treat it as the hinge on which patience, holiness and hope all turn.

The subject is easy to distort in both directions. Some turn it into a timetable to be decoded, others quietly drop it because the delay embarrasses them. Scripture does neither. It tells us he is coming, it refuses to tell us when, and it tells us plainly what kind of people that promise is meant to produce while we wait.
