Promises of forgiveness

Spoken to: Written to believers.

The forgiveness rests on God's faithfulness and justice, not on the quality of the sorrow. Confess, and he forgives and cleanses, and John says 'all'.

1 John 1:9

Spoken to: A psalm of David about the LORD's mercy.

East and west never meet. The distance chosen says the removal is complete, for those who fear him (Psalm 103:11).

Psalm 103:12

Spoken to: Spoken to a sinful Judah through Isaiah.

The invitation is to come and reason with God. The promise attached is cleansing of the deepest stain, spoken to people still being called to repent (Isaiah 1:16-17).

Isaiah 1:18

Spoken to: The prophet's confession on behalf of God's people.

Sin is pictured as trampled and sunk. The confidence rests on what the next verse calls God's faithfulness sworn to the fathers (Micah 7:20).
