Promises of strength
The promises of strength in Scripture are almost never promises that a believer will be naturally strong. They are promises of strength given to people who admit they are not.

Strength is given to the faint, not the self-sufficient, and it is renewed in those who wait. Even youths, Isaiah says, grow tired (Isaiah 40:30).

The verse before names what 'all things' means for Paul: being brought low and abounding, hunger and plenty (Philippians 4:12). It is a promise of contentment in every circumstance, not a promise of unlimited achievement.

The prayer was for removal. The answer was sufficient grace. God's power resting on weakness is the promise, and Paul calls it a reason to boast.

The promise is presence and help in trouble, not exemption from it. The psalm goes on to imagine the earth itself giving way, with God still present (Psalm 46:2-3).
