Psalm 90

Historical background

The Psalter grew across Israel's whole story: monarchy, war, reform, exile, and return. Many psalms began as personal prayers and were later collected as the songbook of the gathered people, which is why they hold private grief and public worship in the same breath.

Roughly the tenth to the fifth centuries BC, gathered over many generations.

Israel at worship — first sung in the temple, then carried into exile and household prayer.

Cultural and literary context

These were sung, not silently read. Hebrew poetry works by parallel lines rather than rhyme, so the second line usually deepens, sharpens, or answers the first. Reading aloud recovers most of what the page hides.

The book falls into five collections. Psalms of praise, lament, thanksgiving, wisdom, and kingship sit side by side, and laments outnumber the rest — an honest structure for an honest life.
