Proverbs 31

Historical background

Israel's court needed administrators who could judge well. Proverbs belongs to that training tradition, shared across the ancient Near East, but grounded in the fear of the Lord rather than mere technique.

Tenth century BC onward, edited into its present form after the exile.

Young men in training for responsibility, addressed throughout as 'my son'.

Cultural and literary context

Wisdom literature was common in Egypt and Mesopotamia. Proverbs borrows the form and redirects it: skill in living is inseparable from reverence toward God.

Short two-line sayings dominate, with longer poems on Wisdom personified. A proverb states what is generally true, not what is always true — Job and Ecclesiastes guard it from being misread as a formula.
