Humility and Service

What it means

Whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wants to be first shall be servant of all, for even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. The teaching answers two disciples asking for the best seats.

Why every Christian should know it

It gives the standard and the example in the same breath. Service is not the price of greatness; it is what greatness looks like in Christ's kingdom.

Lord Jesus, you came to serve. Take the ambition in me and turn it toward others.

What it means

God gives more grace, for he resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. James quotes Proverbs, and both Peter and he apply it to life in the church.

It shows that pride is not merely unattractive but opposed by God himself, and that humility is where grace lands.

You were called to freedom, but do not use freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; instead, through love serve one another. Paul puts service forward as the proper use of Christian liberty.
