The Sovereignty of God

What it means

The psalmist answers those who ask where Israel's God is by saying he is in the heavens and does whatever he pleases. The contrast in the psalm is with idols that have mouths and cannot speak.

Why every Christian should know it

It is the shortest statement of God's freedom in the Bible. When you cannot trace what God is doing, this verse gives you somewhere to stand.

What it means

Nebuchadnezzar, restored after his humbling, confesses that God does according to his will among the army of heaven and the inhabitants of the earth, and that no one can stop his hand or ask him what he is doing. The confession comes from a pagan king, which is part of the point.

Why every Christian should know it

It removes the idea that God's rule depends on human agreement. The most powerful man of his day learned it the hard way, and Scripture records it so we need not.
