What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.

The truth of the day
The day is made. That is the reason for gladness in this verse, and it is not a mood the singer works up. Something has happened, and the response is joy.
Day 7 of this week is for looking back rather than pressing forward. Six days of Scripture have gone past. Worship is what you do with what you have seen.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Read Psalm 118 whole and you find this verse two lines after the stone the builders rejected becoming the head of the corner. The day the LORD has made is not any day in general. In the psalm it is the day of a rescue nobody expected, celebrated at the temple gates.
That is why the New Testament reaches for this psalm so often. Jesus quotes the rejected stone of verse 22 in Matthew 21:42, and the crowd sings verse 26 as He enters Jerusalem. Christians who sing this verse are singing about a day of deliverance that the New Testament connects to the risen Christ.

Canonical themeThe day the LORD made in Psalm 118 comes right after the stone the builders rejected is set as the cornerstone. Acts 4:10-12 names that stone as the risen Christ. Christian worship returns to that day again and again.
