A Time for Everything
Wisdom knows the season it is in.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
The Preacher does not say all times are the same or that any activity fits any moment. He says there is an appropriate time for each thing he lists: planting and plucking up, weeping and laughing, keeping silence and speaking. Wisdom includes discerning which season you are actually in.
This is a corrective to two common errors: forcing a spring activity into a winter season, or refusing to move when the season has changed. Much ordinary frustration comes from timing rather than substance, doing a good thing at the wrong moment.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The list in Ecclesiastes 3:2-8 contains fourteen pairs of opposites, twenty-eight items in total, suggesting comprehensiveness rather than an exhaustive catalog. The structure itself teaches the lesson: life is not one uniform activity repeated, but a sequence of contrasting seasons that each require different responses.
Verse 11 adds a crucial qualifier: God has made everything beautiful in its time, and he has set eternity in their heart, yet so that man cannot find out the work that God has done from the beginning even to the end. Wisdom about timing is real but limited. We can often tell what season calls for, but Ecclesiastes is honest that we cannot see the whole pattern the way God does.
