Humble Yourselves Under God's Hand
Humility trusts God's timing for exaltation.

The truth of the day
This verse follows directly from yesterday's, and it moves humility from a posture toward people to a posture toward God Himself. The mighty hand of God is an Old Testament phrase for His power over Israel's circumstances, sometimes disciplining, sometimes delivering.
Peter's instruction assumes that God's hand is at work whether it is felt as pressure or as rescue, and that humility means trusting His timing rather than forcing exaltation for yourself. The due time is His to set, not ours.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The phrase mighty hand of God echoes the exodus narrative, where it describes the power that both judged Egypt and delivered Israel (Deuteronomy 5:15). The same hand disciplines and rescues, and Peter's readers, under real persecution, are told to submit to that same hand rather than fight against their circumstances.
The verse that follows, verse 7, tells them to cast all their anxiety on Him because He cares for them. Humbling yourself under God's hand and casting your anxiety on Him are presented as one movement, not two: trust that releases both the need to control your status and the need to control your worry.

Canonical themePhilippians 2:9 completes the pattern begun on Thursday: because He humbled Himself, God highly exalted Him. Christ is the proof that God's exaltation, in due time, is worth the wait.
