Humility
The Lord is near, but He is near to the lowly.
Built on Philippians 2. Paul grounds a plea for humility among believers in the humility of Christ Himself, who did not consider equality with God something to be grasped but emptied Himself.
Humility is one of the few virtues that vanishes the moment you claim it. The Bible does not present it as low self-esteem or self-hatred. It presents it as an accurate view of yourself before God, and a willingness to place others' good ahead of your own standing. It is a fruit of knowing who God is and who you are not.
This week walks from the pride that unraveled Eden, through the wisdom literature's warnings about pride and honor, into the deepest statement of humility in Scripture: the self-emptying of Christ. It ends by asking what humility looks like worn daily, in ordinary relationships, under the hand of God who lifts up the lowly in His own time.
