You Cannot Serve Two Masters
Money makes a demanding god when it is allowed to be one.

The truth of the day
Jesus does not say it is hard to serve both God and money. He says it is impossible. A servant belongs to one master, and money is presented here as a rival master rather than a mere tool.
This is not a claim that having money is sinful. It is a claim that money is capable of commanding the kind of devotion that belongs only to God, and it will take that place if it is not refused it.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Mammon is an Aramaic word for wealth or property that Jesus personifies here, treating it almost like a rival deity competing for loyalty. The word itself is not evil; what Jesus exposes is the human tendency to give it the devotion that belongs to God alone.
The verse sits right after the teaching on treasure and the eye as a lamp, which means the structure of the passage moves from where you store things, to how you see, to whom you serve. Divided loyalty shows up first in where your treasure sits, and Jesus is tracing that thread to its root.
