The truth of the day
Jesus states a principle that runs straight through the parable of the dishonest manager just before it: character shows up in small transactions as reliably as in large ones. A person is not honest by degrees.
The parable that precedes this is unsettling because the manager is commended for shrewdness, not honesty, and Jesus uses even that to make a point: worldly people are often more strategic with temporary resources than believers are with eternal ones.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Verses 11-12 push the principle further: if you have not been faithful with unrighteous wealth, who will trust you with true riches, and if you have not been faithful with what is another's, who will give you what is your own. Money is treated as a training ground and a test, not the main prize.
The parable of the dishonest manager that opens the chapter is one of the harder ones to read, precisely because the master commends shrewdness rather than integrity. Jesus is not endorsing dishonesty; He is using the manager's urgency about temporary security to needle His hearers about their lack of urgency regarding eternal security.
