I Will Build My Church
The church is Christ's project, not ours.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
Jesus speaks these words right after Peter confesses him as the Christ, the Son of the living God. The church is founded on that confession, and Jesus states plainly that building it is his own work: I will build.
The promise that follows is not that the church will be comfortable but that it will not be overcome. Gates belong to a city under siege from within; the image is of the church advancing against death itself, not merely surviving attack.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
This is the first time the word church (ekklesia) appears in the Gospels. It was an ordinary Greek word for a called-out assembly, used for civic gatherings, and Jesus takes it and gives it new content: an assembly called out by his own authority and built on confession of who he is.
The rock has been debated since the early church: some point to Peter himself, others to his confession. Either reading keeps the same centre, since Peter's significance in Acts flows entirely from his testimony to Christ, not from any authority independent of it.
