One Body, Many Members
Difference within the church is by design.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
Paul is writing to a church quarrelling over which spiritual gifts matter most. His answer explains the differences rather than removing them: one body has many members (1 Corinthians 12:12-14).
The final phrase, so also is Christ, is striking. Paul does not say so also is the church; he identifies the body so closely with Christ that the church's unity in diversity is treated as an extension of who Christ himself is.

- No member of the body can say to another, I have no need of you (1 Corinthians 12:21).
- Unity does not mean uniformity.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Paul develops the body image at length in verses 14-26, imagining a foot or an ear objecting to its place in the body, and an eye claiming it has no need of the hand. The humour in the image makes a serious point: division in the church usually comes from members overvaluing or undervaluing their own function.
Verse 26 pushes the image further than most modern uses of it do: if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. The body is not simply a metaphor for organisation; it is a claim about shared experience. What happens to one part of the church is meant to be felt by the whole.
