The Obedience of Christ
Obedient to death, and that is the centre of the gospel.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.

- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.

The truth of the day
Paul is not primarily teaching doctrine here; he is asking the Philippians to think like this about each other. But to do that he sets out the descent of Christ: from the form of God, to a servant, to death, to a criminal's death.
Even the death of the cross is the last step down. Crucifixion was the most shameful death Rome had. Paul will not let his readers picture the obedience of Christ as noble and tidy.

- Humility in Scripture is measured in steps down, not in words.
- The descent ends in exaltation, but not before death.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Romans 5:19 puts the same truth in a wider frame: as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, by the obedience of one many are made righteous. Christ's obedience is not merely an example to copy; it is a work done on behalf of others.
Notice how the passage turns at verse 9: wherefore God also has highly exalted him. The exaltation follows the obedience rather than replacing it. Every knee will bow to the one who was crucified, which is why Christian humility has a future rather than being resignation.
