Waiting While Doing the Next Right Thing
Joseph kept working while the prison door stayed shut.

The truth of the day
Joseph is in prison unjustly, and the verse does not say he waited passively for release. It says Yahweh was with him and made what he did prosper, and the keeper trusted him with everything. Waiting in Joseph's story looks like faithful work in the place he did not choose.
Between being sold into slavery and standing before Pharaoh, Joseph waited roughly thirteen years. Genesis does not record him complaining. It records him serving well wherever he was put, in Potiphar's house and then in prison.

Scripture explicitly says- Faithfulness in a small or unwanted place is not wasted time.
- God's presence does not always look like rescue; sometimes it looks like being made to prosper where you are.
- Waiting can include real, ordinary work rather than only holding still.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Genesis 37 to 50 tells Joseph's story with a repeated line: Yahweh was with Joseph. It appears in Potiphar's house in 39:2, in the prison in 39:21 and 39:23, and behind his eventual rise in chapter 41. The narrator keeps insisting that the years of waiting were not years God had left him.
Joseph interprets the cupbearer's dream in chapter 40 and asks to be remembered, and then Genesis 40:23 says the cupbearer forgot him, and two full years pass before Pharaoh's dreams bring Joseph back to mind in chapter 41. Even his own reasonable hope for release was delayed further than he expected.

Canonical themePhilippians 2:7 says Christ took the form of a servant, and his years of ordinary work in Nazareth before his public ministry began are passed over in near silence by the Gospels. Faithful, unseen waiting was part of his life before it was part of ours.
