Speak, For Your Servant Hears

Samuel had to be taught how to answer before he recognized who was calling.

Scripture explicitly says

Samuel hears his name three times and each time runs to Eli, because verse 7 says plainly that Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. Not recognizing God's voice at first is not a spiritual failure; it is often simply inexperience.

What changes the fourth time is not Samuel's perception but his instruction. Eli, old and flawed as he is, still knows enough Scripture and enough of God's ways to teach the boy the right response. Readiness to hear is often built by someone else's faithfulness before it is our own.

What the passage says in its own setting

Scripture explicitly says

The chapter opens with a deliberate contrast: the word of the LORD was rare in those days, there was no frequent vision, and Eli's own eyes were growing dim. Physical blindness and spiritual dullness are set side by side, and into that darkness a lamp of God had not yet gone out, verse 3 notes, a small detail that keeps hope alive even in a decayed priesthood.

Application

It is worth noticing that God speaks to Samuel about Eli's household, the very household teaching him to listen. Hearing God does not exempt anyone from correction, including the people who taught you to hear Him. The message is hard, and Samuel, still a boy, is told to hide nothing of it from Eli the next morning.

Hebrews 1:1-2 says God, having spoken long ago through the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by his Son. Samuel's night in the tabernacle looks forward to a fuller, final speaking in Jesus Christ.
