At the mountain of transfiguration, God narrows His speech to one command.

The truth of the day
Peter has just suggested building three shelters, treating Moses, Elijah, and Jesus as equals worth honoring side by side. The voice from the cloud corrects this immediately: only one figure remains the subject of the command, and it is not Moses the lawgiver or Elijah the prophet, but Jesus.
Listen to him is the whole content of what the Father says. After Moses and Elijah, representing the law and the prophets, have appeared and vanished, the final word left standing is a summons to attend to the Son. Every previous voice of God finds its completion in Him.

- Comparing Christ to other good things, even biblical figures, can miss the point of who He is.
- Listening to Jesus means attending to His actual words, including hard ones.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Mark places this scene immediately after Jesus predicts His death and resurrection and Peter rebukes Him for it, chapter 8:31-33. The transfiguration functions as heaven's answer to Peter's resistance: the Son who must suffer is the very one the Father commands them to listen to, including the parts of His teaching they find hardest to accept.
The cloud recalls the cloud of glory that covered Sinai and later the tabernacle, Exodus 24:15-18 and 40:34-35, the visible sign of God's presence. Its appearance here signals that the same God who spoke at Sinai is speaking again, but the content has shifted from law given through Moses to a person to be heard directly.
