The Steps of a Good Man Are Ordered
Providence guides even the details a person never consciously chooses.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.

The truth of the day
This verse does not describe a technique for finding God's will; it describes a fact about how God relates to those who delight in Him, verse 4 of the same psalm. Their steps, plural and ordinary, are established by Him.
Read alongside Proverbs 16:9, a man's heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps, this gives a settled confidence: planning and deciding are not opposed to trusting providence. A believer plans wisely and trusts that the LORD is establishing the actual path, including through circumstances never consciously chosen.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Psalm 37 as a whole addresses envy of the wicked who seem to prosper, and its counsel is not analysis of their circumstances but trust, verse 3, delight, verse 4, commitment, verse 5, and rest, verse 7. Verse 23's promise about established steps sits within this larger call to a settled trust rather than anxious plotting of one's own path.
The Hebrew word for established, kun, is the same root used of God establishing the heavens and the earth, giving the image of steps founded as solidly as creation itself. This is a strong claim: the ordinary movements of a life yielded to God are treated with the same providential care as the cosmos.
