If It Is Possible, As Far As It Depends On You
Sometimes discerning God's will is about applying wisdom, not waiting for a new revelation.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

Paul does not command an absolute outcome, peace with everyone, because he knows some will not cooperate. He commands the qualified and realistic version: as far as it depends on you, do what you can toward peace.
This kind of guidance is not a mystery to be uncovered; it is wisdom to be applied. Scripture gives many such instructions, tied to a general pattern of Christlike living rather than to any single decision that shapes countless daily choices without needing a fresh word for each one.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The verse sits inside Romans 12:14-21, a dense section of practical instructions: bless those who persecute you, do not repay evil for evil, feed your enemy if he is hungry. None of these require special guidance to know; they require the harder work of obedience to what is already commanded, applied wisely to a specific relationship.
Paul's qualifications, if possible, as far as it depends on you, are honest about the limits of unilateral peacemaking. This protects the command from becoming a source of false guilt when another person refuses reconciliation, while still holding the believer responsible for their own half of the relationship.
