What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
Every piece is named plainly, none of it left vague. Truth, righteousness, readiness from the gospel, faith, salvation, and the word of God are not abstractions here but items Paul expects believers to actually put on.
The shield is described as able to quench all the fiery darts, not most of them. Faith is given a specific defensive function against a specific kind of attack, the sudden and burning kind.

- The sword is called the word of God, the only offensive piece named.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The order follows how a Roman soldier would dress: belt first to secure the tunic, breastplate over the torso, footwear last before marching, then the items carried, shield, helmet, sword. Paul's readers would have pictured a familiar sight standing outside their door.
The shield in view, thureos, was a large body shield, not the small round buckler, built to be soaked with water before battle so it could smother flaming arrows. Faith is pictured not as a private feeling but as something substantial enough to absorb a real attack.

Canonical themeIsaiah 59:17 pictures Yahweh himself wearing righteousness and salvation as armor before he comes to save. Paul hands believers the same equipment because Christ has already worn it and won.
