Not Against Flesh and Blood
The real conflict is not with the people in front of you.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.

- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.

The truth of the day
Paul redirects attention away from the visible antagonist. Whatever the Ephesians were tempted to treat as the enemy, human or circumstantial, he names the actual opposition as unseen.
This does not excuse human wrongdoing or remove responsibility from people who do harm. It relocates where the real resistance is coming from, so that anger aimed at a person misses the real target.

Scripture explicitly says- The opposition Paul names in Ephesians 6:12 is not the visible person or situation.
- Misdirected battle against people leaves the real enemy untouched.
- Naming the true struggle changes how you respond to conflict.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The terms principalities, powers, world rulers and spiritual forces echo language used elsewhere in Ephesians for the authority Christ was raised above in 1:20-21. Paul is not inventing new categories; he is applying a hierarchy he has already described as subject to Christ.
Wrestling, palē, is a term from hand-to-hand combat, close and personal rather than distant. The image is not a battlefield of armies at a distance but a grappling match, which fits how temptation and opposition often arrive: close, personal, and disguised.
