Strong in the Lord

The truth of the day
Paul does not tell the Ephesians to find strength in themselves. The command is to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might, a strength located outside the person told to use it.
The purpose given for the armor is to stand, not to conquer new ground. Three times in this passage the word stand or withstand appears. The picture is defensive: holding a position that has already been won.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Ephesians was likely written from a Roman prison, so Paul had a soldier beside him for months as he wrote and dictated this letter. The armor list in verses 14 to 17 matches a Roman soldier's equipment piece by piece, which suggests the image was not abstract to him but literally in view.
The word translated wiles is methodeia, used elsewhere in the letter at 4:14 of the scheming that blows believers about like waves. Paul consistently associates the enemy's work with deception and method rather than raw power, which shapes what kind of readiness is called for.

Canonical themeColossians 2:15 says Christ disarmed the rulers and authorities and triumphed over them at the cross. Every command to stand in Ephesians 6 rests on a battle Christ already won.
