A Rest That Remains
The Sabbath points to a rest still ahead.

The truth of the day
The writer of Hebrews has been arguing that Israel in the wilderness failed to enter God's rest through unbelief, and now says a rest still remains, open to God's people even after that failure.
The rest described is tied to resting from one's own works, paralleling God's rest from his work in Genesis 2. Entering it is connected to faith rather than to further striving.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Hebrews 3 and 4 build this argument from Psalm 95, where God swears in his wrath that the wilderness generation would not enter his rest. The writer notices that the psalm was written long after Joshua had already led Israel into the promised land, meaning the rest in view could not simply be the land itself; another rest remained open.
The Greek word for rest used in verse 9, sabbatismos, appears nowhere else in the New Testament and is built directly from the word Sabbath. The writer is deliberately linking the weekly rest of the fourth commandment to a larger, ongoing rest found through faith in Christ.
