Is Anyone Sick Among You?
The church is given a practical instruction for illness.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

James gives a concrete, practical instruction: call the elders, pray, anoint with oil. Healing here is not framed as something to seek alone but something the church community brings to a sick member.
The passage also connects sickness and sin without insisting every illness has a sinful cause; it simply notes that where sin is present, forgiveness accompanies the prayer for healing.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The verses that follow, in James 5:16, broaden the instruction: confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The elders' visit in verse 14 is a specific case of a wider pattern of mutual prayer in the church.
James points to Elijah in verses 17-18 as an example of the prayer of a righteous person being powerful, praying that it would not rain and then that it would, showing that this instruction assumes God actively answers earnest prayer, without guaranteeing a particular outcome every time.
