Jesus Wept
The shortest verse in Scripture says the most about grief.

The truth of the day
Jesus knew He was about to raise Lazarus. He had already said as much a few verses earlier. And He wept anyway, standing at the tomb of a friend, watching Mary and the others cry.
This settles something before the rest of the week begins. Grief is not a lack of faith or a failure to trust the resurrection. The One who is the resurrection and the life wept at a grave He was about to empty.

- He is troubled by death itself, not only by doubt.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
John 11:33 says Jesus was deeply moved in spirit and troubled, using a word that elsewhere describes agitation, even anger. He is not merely sad. Something about death itself provokes Him, the intruder in a world He made good.
Verse 38 says He came to the tomb still deeply moved. The miracle that follows in verses 43 and 44 does not erase what came before it. Scripture lets both stand together: real grief, and real power over the thing grieved.

Canonical themeThe One who wept at Lazarus's tomb is the same One who was raised on the third day. He does not skip past grief to get to resurrection; He goes through it, and takes His people through it with Him.
