A Friend Sticks Closer Than a Brother
Some friendships prove more durable than blood ties.

The proverb contrasts quantity with quality. Many companions can lead a man to ruin, while a single friend who truly sticks close is worth more than a crowd of acquaintances.
The comparison to a brother is deliberate. Family ties were a primary social bond in the ancient world, and this proverb says that a genuine friend can equal or surpass even that.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The Hebrew wording behind may be ruined can also be read as a man who has friends must show himself friendly, and translators differ on the exact sense of the first half. What is consistent across readings is the second half's point: one steadfast friend outweighs a wide but shallow network.
This proverb belongs beside Proverbs 17:17 from earlier in the week, both defining friendship not by breadth but by depth and endurance. Scripture is more interested in the durability of a friendship than in its size.
