Go and Make Disciples
The last command before the ascension sets the direction for everything after.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
The command is given to a small group on a mountain in Galilee, some of whom, verse 17 says, still doubted. Jesus does not wait for their doubts to resolve before sending them.
Making disciples is defined here as more than converting people: it includes baptizing and teaching them to observe everything Christ commanded. Evangelism in the Bible is the front end of a longer process, not an isolated event.

- His promised presence covers the whole task, to the end of the age.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Matthew's Gospel opens by calling Jesus Immanuel, God with us (1:23), and closes with Him promising to be with His disciples always. The book is framed by presence, and the Great Commission sits inside that frame rather than standing as a bare command with no support behind it.
All nations reaches back to the promise given to Abraham that in him all families of the earth would be blessed (Genesis 12:3). The command in Matthew 28 is not a new idea appearing at the end of the story; it is Genesis's promise finally set in motion through a sent people.

Canonical themeThe commission rests entirely on the authority Jesus claims in verse 18: all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. Evangelism sends people out under a finished authority, not an uncertain one.
