How Shall They Hear Without a Preacher
Paul traces belief backward to someone being sent.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.

The truth of the day
Paul builds a chain backward from calling on the Lord to believing, to hearing, to someone preaching, to someone being sent. Each link depends on the one before it, and the chain has no gaps for belief to appear without a message.
He quotes Isaiah 52:7 about beautiful feet, a strange compliment turned into praise, because those feet carried news of peace. The ordinariness of the messenger is not the point; the news they carried is.

- The messenger is honoured because of the message, not apart from it.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Romans 10:17 draws the conclusion from this chain plainly: faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Paul is not describing evangelism as one useful method among several; he is describing the ordinary means by which God brings people to faith throughout Romans 9 and 10.
The chapter opens with Paul's own heart's desire and prayer for Israel's salvation (10:1), which frames the whole argument. The theology of how faith comes is not written in the abstract; it is written by a man who wants specific people to hear and believe.
