Go and Make Disciples
Discipleship ends by reproducing itself.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.

- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.

The truth of the day
The Great Commission is given by a resurrected Christ who has just stated, in verse 18, that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to him. The command to make disciples rests on that authority, not on human strategy.
Notice the full shape of the command: go, baptize, and teach to observe. Discipleship is not complete at conversion. It includes ongoing obedience to everything Jesus commanded, which loops the whole church back to His own teaching as the standard.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The command make disciples is the single main verb in the Greek sentence, with going, baptizing, and teaching functioning as participles describing how it is carried out. The whole life of the church, in this reading, exists to serve that one central task: producing learners who follow Jesus as these first disciples did.
The promise that closes the Gospel, I am with you always, even to the end of the age, answers the weight of the command with the assurance of Christ's continual presence. Matthew's Gospel opened by naming Jesus Immanuel, God with us, in 1:23, and it closes with that same presence promised for the entire task ahead.
