Isaiah's vision of holiness comes before his commission.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.

The truth of the day
This offer follows a vision of the Lord high and lifted up, seraphim crying holy, and Isaiah's own confession that he is a man of unclean lips. Only after his guilt is dealt with by a coal from the altar does he speak up to volunteer.
The order matters: seeing God's holiness, confessing his own condition, receiving cleansing, then hearing the call. Isaiah's readiness to go is the fruit of what happened to him first, not a decision made independently of it.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Isaiah 6 is dated to the year King Uzziah died, a moment of national uncertainty about succession. The chapter answers that uncertainty by showing Isaiah a King who does not die: the Lord, high and lifted up, still seated on the throne regardless of who sits on Judah's.
The message Isaiah is given to carry, in verses 9-10, is a hard one: preach to a people who will hear but not understand. His commission is not a promise of a receptive audience. He goes anyway, having already said yes before hearing what the assignment costs.

Canonical themeJohn 12:41 states plainly that Isaiah saw Jesus' glory and spoke about Him, tying the throne room vision of Isaiah 6 directly to the person of Christ.
