52 Week Journey

Week 42 of 52

The Prophets

Called to speak for God to a people who did not always want to hear it.

Built on . The Lord does nothing without revealing His secret to His servants the prophets, and when He speaks, the prophet cannot but speak. This is the office the whole week studies.

The Old Testament prophets are often reduced to prediction, but their main work was calling God's people back to a covenant they had already been given. They confronted kings, exposed idolatry, defended the poor, and grieved over judgment even while announcing it. Their words carried weight because they claimed to speak not their own opinion but the word of the Lord.

This week reads a sample of prophetic voices in their own settings: a shepherd sent from Judah to confront the north, a priest called while still a young man, a preacher who ran from his commission, and others besides. It asks what made someone a true prophet, what the prophets actually said about the future, and how their words find their answer in Christ.
