The Sun of Righteousness
The last prophet of the Old Testament points to a coming healing.

The truth of the day
Malachi's final chapter contrasts two outcomes: a burning day for the arrogant and evildoers, and rising light with healing for those who fear the Lord's name. The prophet ends the Old Testament not on judgment alone but on a promise of coming light.
The image of calves let loose from the stall pictures unrestrained joy after confinement, a fitting close to a book that has spent its chapters confronting a weary, half-hearted people with God's continuing love for them (1:2).

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Malachi closes with a command to remember the law of Moses (4:4) and a promise that Elijah will be sent before the great and terrible day of the Lord (4:5-6), turning the hearts of fathers to children. The book ends looking backward to the law and forward to a coming messenger in the same breath.
Four hundred years of prophetic silence follow Malachi before the New Testament opens, which makes the placement of this promise at the very end of the Old Testament canon significant: the last recorded prophetic word before that silence points ahead to what comes next.
