The truth of the day
The psalmist does not wait to feel grateful before entering. Thanksgiving is the manner of entry itself, the way a worshiper approaches the temple gates, commanded rather than optional.
Verse 5 gives the reason immediately after: the Lord is good, his mercy is everlasting, and his faithfulness endures to all generations. Thanksgiving is grounded in facts about God that do not change with the worshiper's mood.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Psalm 100 is titled a psalm of thanksgiving in its heading, one of the shortest psalms yet placed deliberately among the psalms of praise that close book four of the Psalter. Its brevity is part of its force: it names the whole earth as the one called to make a joyful shout, not Israel alone.
The psalm's structure moves from command to reason twice: know that the LORD, he is God in verse 3 grounds the call to serve with gladness, and his goodness and mercy in verse 5 ground the call to give thanks. Every imperative in the psalm rests on an indicative fact about who God is.
