Thanksgiving
Gratitude in Scripture is commanded, offered as sacrifice, and given even before the answer arrives.
Built on Psalm 100. A short psalm that commands entry into God's presence with thanksgiving and praise, and gives the reason: the LORD is good, his mercy is everlasting.
Thanksgiving in the Bible is rarely a feeling caught after the fact. It is commanded, it is offered as an actual sacrifice at the temple, and Paul tells a suffering church to give thanks in everything before he tells them the outcome. Scripture treats gratitude as an act of the will directed at who God is, not only a response to what he has just done.
This week moves through thanksgiving's range: the psalms that command it, the one leper out of ten who turned back, thanksgiving demanded in the middle of trouble, and thanksgiving as the ordinary posture of a Christian life. None of it asks the reader to feel something they do not feel. It asks them to say something true.
