Bread That Does Not Fail
People do not live by bread alone.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.

The truth of the day
Jesus says this to the devil after forty days without food, at the exact moment hunger would make bread from stones seem like the most reasonable request in the world. He answers with Deuteronomy 8:3, quoting Moses's explanation of the manna in the wilderness.
The point of the original passage was that Israel's hunger was allowed so they would learn dependence on God's word, not just God's provision. Jesus, in the wilderness like Israel before Him, chooses the same lesson over an easier meal.

Scripture explicitly says- Physical need is real, and in John 6:35 Jesus points past it to a hunger bread does not reach.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Deuteronomy 8:2-3 explains the whole forty years of wandering: God let Israel hunger, then fed them manna, food they had not known, so they would learn that man does not live by bread alone. The lesson was earned through actual deprivation, not taught abstractly.
Matthew deliberately parallels Jesus with Israel: forty days in the wilderness answering forty years, tested by the same kind of hunger. Where Israel grumbled and failed the test repeatedly, recorded throughout Exodus and Numbers, Jesus quotes the very passage that diagnosed Israel's failure and succeeds where they did not.
