Judgment and Mercy
The same God who judges sin without exception is the God who delights in mercy.
Built on Exodus 34:6-7. God's own self-description to Moses, merciful and gracious, forgiving iniquity, yet by no means clearing the guilty. Both truths spoken in one breath.
Judgment and mercy are not opposites fighting for control of God's character. Scripture holds them together in the same sentences, sometimes the same verse, refusing to let either one cancel the other. God judges sin because he is just, and he shows mercy because he is merciful, and the cross is where the Bible says both were satisfied at once.
This week reads judgment and mercy through some of their clearest scenes: a flood and an ark built inside it, a city spared for the sake of ten, a prophet who resented mercy shown to his enemies, and a cross where wrath and forgiveness met. None of these passages soften judgment to make mercy easier to believe.
