Not of Works
Grace and earning cannot occupy the same sentence.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.

Paul is careful here almost to the point of redundancy: by grace, through faith, not of yourselves, gift of God, not of works. Four separate phrases all deny the same thing, that salvation originates in human effort or merit.
The final clause names the danger this guards against: boasting. If salvation were even partly earned, credit would be shared, and grace would stop being grace. Paul closes that door completely.

- A gift received is different from a wage earned; only one leaves room for boasting.
- God designed salvation this way specifically to remove grounds for pride.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Even faith itself is described within the gift: that not of yourselves refers most naturally to the whole preceding clause, salvation by grace through faith, rather than to faith alone in isolation. Either way, the passage's force is the same: nothing in the sentence originates with the sinner.
Verse 10 immediately adds, we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. Paul is not opposed to good works; he places them after salvation, not before it, as the fruit of grace rather than its cause. The order matters as much as the content.
