Grace and Truth Through Jesus Christ
The law came by Moses; grace came by a person.

The truth of the day
John does not set law and grace against each other as though the law were bad. He shows a progression: the law revealed God's standard through Moses, and grace and truth arrived in full through Jesus Christ. One prepared; the other fulfilled.
Grace upon grace is an unusual phrase, suggesting a continual supply, one grace following another (John 1:16). This is the note the whole week has been building toward.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
John's phrase from his fullness recalls Colossians 1:19, it was the Father's good pleasure that in him all the fullness should dwell. The grace believers receive is not measured out from a limited store but drawn from a fullness that does not diminish with use, which is why John can describe it as grace upon grace rather than grace once given.
The contrast with Moses is not a put-down of the law, which John's Gospel elsewhere treats with respect, but a statement about where each belongs in redemptive history. Exodus 34:6 already described the LORD as abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, the same pairing John renders grace and truth; John is saying that what was spoken about God's character in the Old Testament was realized, made concretely present, in Jesus.
