The Father Ran
God's response to repentance is not withheld until proof is offered.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says

The truth of the day
The father sees the son while he is still far off, which means he had been watching for him. He does not wait for an apology or a period of probation. He runs.
In that culture, a man of standing did not run; it meant lifting his robe and exposing his legs, an undignified act. The father absorbs that shame to reach his son before the son can finish explaining himself.

Scripture explicitly says- God is not reluctant to receive repentance.
- Watching and running both belong to how the father loves.
- You do not need a finished apology before God moves toward you.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The son gets through only the first half of his rehearsed speech, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, before the father interrupts with commands to the servants in verse 22. The request to be made a hired servant is never spoken, because the father's welcome overtakes it.
This scene answers the complaint that opens the chapter, that Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them. The father's running is Luke's picture of exactly the behavior the religious leaders found scandalous, portrayed as the truest reflection of God's own character.
